The history of Jamaica

Jamaica , an island that soars about 480 miles south of Florida , across the Caribbean sea . Also known as the third largest island on the Caribbean sea after Cuba and Hispaniola . Jamaica is about 146 miles long and varies from 22 to 51 miles wide . Due to its landmass it is often compared to the state of Connecticut .

Although the capital of Jamaica is Kingston , it has other important places and centers for trades and businesses. Their official language is English and the most common religion is Protestantism . In Jamaica , the transportation system is very efficient as it connects throughout the entire country which aids their movement . They also have a coastal highway that connects to other coasts as well . But despite all of the joys , there are some very serious human environmental interactions present . This includes Hurricanes , Earthquakes etc. but amidst all of these , the beaches seem to make all of the worries disappear .

The Inhabitants of Jamaica before the arrival of Columbus

Before the arrival of the famous Christopher Columbus , the history of Jamaica is said to have been dated back around the 1000 AD when a Tiano tribe called the Arawaks crossed the Caribbean sea in canoes to settle on the island . The Arawak Indians then gave the island the name Xaymaca . It wasn't long before most of the Arawaks were killed or died from the European diseases . This resulted in the transportation of Africans by the Spanish to replace them . In the year 1655 , after the English took Jamaica from the Spaniards Indians and the Chinese were also imported in to help the African population work their businesses . After some years , many people also arrived from France , Spain , Portugal , Syria , England and so on . This resulted into a unique and and dramatic mixture of races .
